Spelling
When a word has the / ȯ / sound at the beginning or in the middle of the syllable, it is usually spelled au. When the / ȯ / sound is at the end of the syllable, it is usually spelled aw. If the / ȯ / sound is followed by only n, only k, or only l, it is spelled with aw. The word haunt is spelled au because it is followed by two consonants. The word brawl is spelled with aw because only the letter l follows the / ȯ / sound. |
