This upcoming week (September 3-7) is the first week reading minutes count toward my students' grades. One reading response is due any time this week. You can find the prompts on the back of your child's folder and the instructions are on the front of the folder. Your child is welcome to write it by hand on a piece of paper or email it to me. We are starting the first unit in Wonders and will get into small groups this week. If you would like to volunteer, we would love some help with running a group!
My math class is going through place value this week. My students are showing me that they understand place value, but since it is such an essential concept, we are not going to skip it. They need to understand it in order to be successful in future grades. We will work on 4th grade level math throughout this year. We had a quick introduction to fractions on 8/31 and I was excited to see how well the kids were understanding it! They already showed me that they understand fraction equivalence (to a small extent), which is the most difficult 3rd grade concept for many children.
My homeroom is starting the year by learning about space, the planets, and our solar system! My students understand that the sun and planets are spherical and that the sun can help us predict the weather, the season, and it can help us find our way around.
We have a LOT of September birthdays in third grade! Remember, we are a Gold Medal school and do not allow treats, but we would love for you or your child to bring in a favorite picture book to read with the class! Small toys or a quick craft are also fine by me, as long as every child receives one. I have 23 students in my literacy class, 27 in math, and 25 in homeroom. There are 50 third graders total.
